The Tallest Outfield Player in Premier League History for Every Big Six Club

By Club Ten · Published 31 August 2026 · Outfield players only · Data through 2025–26

Peter Crouch, at 6ft 7in (201cm), is the tallest outfield player to appear in the Premier League for both Liverpool and Tottenham, the only player to top this list at two different Big Six clubs.

This list overlaps with Club Ten's 31 August daily puzzles across all six clubs. Spoiler warning if you haven't played those yet.

Arsenal: Per Mertesacker leads a defensive list

Mertesacker's 198cm tops Arsenal's list, with Nwankwo Kanu (197cm) close behind. What stands out further down is how few of the ten were built as out-and-out target men. Steve Bould, Patrick Vieira and Olivier Giroud all made well over 150 Premier League appearances at 192–193cm, suggesting Arsenal has generally used height at centre-back and in midfield rather than chasing physical strikers.

Chelsea: Tosin Adarabioyo's brief run at the top

Adarabioyo has made just 38 Premier League appearances for Chelsea since joining in 2024, but at 196cm no one taller has featured for the club in the competition. Nemanja Matić, at 194cm, is a repeat name on this list, he also ranks among Manchester United's tallest outfield players after his 2017 move across the Pennines.

Liverpool: Peter Crouch, the tallest outfield player at two clubs

Crouch's 201cm is untouched at Liverpool, 5cm clear of Sebastián Coates in second. Virgil van Dijk (195cm) is the most accomplished name on the list by some distance, 272 Premier League appearances and a genuine claim to being the club's greatest-ever centre-back, despite ranking only third by height.

Manchester City: a list built on fringe players

Daniel Van Buyten's 197cm tops City's list despite just 5 Premier League appearances in 2004–05. It is the shallowest list of the six by playing time: only Erling Haaland (195cm, 132 apps) and Sylvain Distin (192cm, 178 apps) have made a real Premier League career at City among these ten. Niall Quinn, at 193cm, is the most notable name from the club's pre-title era squads.

Manchester United: three number nines, one shared name

Wout Weghorst's loan spell brought United's tallest-ever outfield Premier League player at 197cm, just ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimović and Benjamin Šeško at 195cm. Nemanja Matić appears here too, at the same 194cm he stood at Chelsea, one of only two players (with Kai Havertz) to feature in the top 10 for two different Big Six clubs on this list.

Tottenham: Crouch's second club

Crouch's later move to Tottenham means he tops this list at 201cm there too, ahead of Anthony Gardner at 196cm. Emmanuel Adebayor and Younès Kaboul, both at 192cm, were regular starters during Tottenham's early-2010s Champions League push.

The three names that show up twice

Three players appear in the outfield top 10 at two different Big Six clubs. Peter Crouch tops the list at both Liverpool and Tottenham, the only player to finish first at two clubs. Nemanja Matić sits at 194cm on both the Chelsea and Manchester United lists, a rare case of a player's height record following him through a direct transfer between two Big Six rivals. Kai Havertz, at 193cm, appears on both the Arsenal and Chelsea lists, the two clubs where he has spent his entire Premier League career.

Why outfield players only

Goalkeepers are, on average, considerably taller than outfield players, and including them would turn a list about football stature into a list almost entirely about goalkeepers. Restricting this to outfield players gives a clearer picture of where clubs have genuinely used height as part of their playing style, in central defence and up front, rather than at a position where extra height is close to a job requirement.

Methodology & sources

Only outfield players (goalkeepers excluded) who made at least one Premier League appearance for the club in question are counted. Ties on height are broken first by Premier League appearances for that club, then alphabetically.

Heights are taken from each player's Wikipedia infobox and cross-checked against official club squad pages and Premier League player profiles. Direct sources for the six headline players: Peter Crouch, Per Mertesacker, Tosin Adarabioyo, Daniel Van Buyten, and Wout Weghorst. Data runs through the end of the 2025–26 season.
