The Last 10 Permanent Captains of Every Premier League Big Six Club

By Club Ten · Published 30 August 2026 · Captaincy status as of 30 August 2026 · Primary permanent captains only

Every club handles the captaincy differently. Some hand the armband to one player for more than a decade, while others change captain every season or two.

From John Terry and Steven Gerrard to Martin Ødegaard and Bruno Fernandes, here are the last 10 permanent captains at each of the Premier League's Big Six clubs, listed most recent first.

This list overlaps with Club Ten's 17 August daily puzzles across all six clubs. Spoiler warning if you haven't played those yet.

Arsenal's last 10 permanent captains

Arsenal's captaincy has moved particularly quickly in the post-Wenger years. Six primary captains served between 2016 and 2022 alone, compared with the long reigns of Tony Adams and Patrick Vieira in the preceding era.

Manchester City's last 10 permanent captains

Manchester City's captaincy tells the story of the club's transformation.

Richard Dunne captained City in the years surrounding the 2008 takeover before Vincent Kompany took over in 2011 and led the club through its rise to the top of English football.

Since Kompany's departure in 2019, the captaincy has changed much more frequently. David Silva, Fernandinho, İlkay Gündoğan, Kyle Walker and Bernardo Silva all held the role before Rúben Dias became City's primary captain for the 2026/27 season.

Manchester United's last 10 permanent captains

Roy Keane's eight years as Manchester United captain from 1997 to 2005 is the standout reign on this list.

Gary Neville and Nemanja Vidić provided further continuity, but United's captaincy has changed considerably more frequently since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.

Six permanent captains have followed Vidić since his departure in 2014, with Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young and Harry Maguire preceding current captain Bruno Fernandes.

Tottenham's last 10 permanent captains

Tottenham's captaincy has undergone two changes in just over a year.

Son Heung-min succeeded Hugo Lloris in 2023, before Cristian Romero took over following Son's departure in 2025. Romero's subsequent move to Atlético Madrid in 2026 opened the door for Micky van de Ven, who was named Tottenham's first-team captain for the 2026/27 season.

Further down the list, Ledley King's seven-year spell and Lloris's eight years stand out as the longest Tottenham captaincies represented among the club's most recent 10.

Who has captained a Big Six club the longest?

John Terry's 13-year spell as Chelsea captain is the longest across these six lists, followed by Steven Gerrard's 12 years at Liverpool.

Gary Mabbutt, who captained Tottenham for 11 years from 1987 to 1998, would rank third overall but no longer appears among Tottenham's 10 most recent permanent captains following the appointment of Micky van de Ven in 2026.

At the opposite extreme, Granit Xhaka's brief spell as Arsenal captain in 2019 lasted only weeks before he was stripped of the armband following his confrontation with supporters.

Who are the current Big Six captains?

As of 30 August 2026, the primary captains of the Premier League's Big Six clubs are:

The era of the long-serving captain is disappearing

One pattern stands out when the six clubs are viewed together: long captaincies have become increasingly rare.

John Terry spent 13 years as Chelsea captain, Steven Gerrard led Liverpool for 12, and Roy Keane captained Manchester United for eight. More recently, several Big Six clubs have changed captains every few seasons.

Arsenal went through Aubameyang, Xhaka, Lacazette and Ødegaard in a short period. Manchester City's captaincy has moved from David Silva to Fernandinho, Gündoğan, Walker, Bernardo Silva and Dias since 2019. Tottenham have now had Son, Romero and Van de Ven since Hugo Lloris's eight-year reign ended in 2023.

Whether Ødegaard, James, Van Dijk, Dias, Fernandes or Van de Ven can eventually build a Terry- or Gerrard-style captaincy remains to be seen.

Methodology & sources

Only officially designated primary permanent club captains are included.

Vice-captains, members of wider leadership groups, caretaker captains and players who wore the armband solely because the club's primary captain was injured, suspended or otherwise absent are excluded.

Where a club uses a wider captaincy or leadership group, this list includes only the player designated as its primary or first captain.

Where a permanent captaincy change occurred during a season, the transition year may therefore appear for both the outgoing and incoming captain.

The lists reflect each club's captaincy status as of 30 August 2026 and have been cross-checked against official club announcements, club historical records and independent football history sources.
